History of Photography Storia della Fotografia,

Josef Koudelka

Josef Koudelka is considered one of the great masters of photography. True to his black and white of him, the Czech photographer captured the fragility of the human spirit against the backdrop of melancholy landscapes. Desolation, abandonment, departure, despair and alienation are constant themes in his work. Koudelka's entire life is permeated by the mere need to photograph. Sales of his books helped him travel.

Josef Koudelka, born in Moravia, made his first photographs as a student in the 1950s. Around the same time he began his career as an aeronautical engineer in 1961, he too began photographing Gypsies in Czechoslovakia and theater in Prague. He devoted himself full time to photography in 1967.The following year, Koudelka photographed the Soviet invasion of Prague, publishing his photographs under the abbreviation PP (Prague Photographer) for fear of reprisals to him and his family. In 1969, he was anonymously awarded the Robert Capa Gold Medal of the Overseas Press Club for those photographs.

Gypsies, he meets them in the early sixties in a concert of Gypsy music. Since then he will never abandon them, overcoming all the prejudices, then as now, about the cigani as they are called in Czech, which steal, kill and are unreliable. In a continuous wandering, with an extraordinary use of black and white film, Josef Koudelka between 1962 and 1971 documents the daily life of the Cigani in Bohemia, Moravia, Slovakia, Romania, Hungary, France and Spain. The of him is neither a political nor an anthropological work.
