The subjects of her photos were the poor, the marginalized, but her gaze was never pitiful because the images of her, despite being a portrait of a period of great crisis, always let emerge the great dignity of these women and of these men. Dorothea Lange loved being among people, using the gaze of photography as an instrument of testimony and denunciation. Her disability perhaps made her feel on the side of the weakest, despite her being a very successful photographer. In 1966, the New York MoMA dedicated, for the first time, an exhibition to a woman: that woman was Dorothea Lange, who had died the previous year of stomach cancer. The history (of photography) had been written.
